Unit 1: Review of Newtonian Mechanics

  • Newton’s laws of motion and their limitations
  • Inertial & non-inertial reference frames
  • Pseudo forces (Coriolis force, centrifugal force)
  • Conservation laws: Energy, Linear momentum, Angular momentum
  • Two-body problem, Center of mass

Unit 2: Lagrangian Formulation

  • Generalized coordinates and constraints
  • D’Alembert’s principle
  • Lagrange’s equations of motion
  • Applications: simple pendulum, double pendulum, Atwood’s machine
  • Velocity-dependent potentials
  • Symmetry and conservation laws (Noether’s theorem basic idea)

Unit 3: Hamiltonian Formulation

  • Hamilton’s principle (principle of least action)
  • Legendre transformation
  • Hamilton’s canonical equations
  • Applications: harmonic oscillator, central force motion
  • Poisson brackets and their properties
  • Canonical transformations

Unit 4: Central Force Problem

  • Reduction to one-body problem
  • Equations of motion in central force field

  • Kepler’s laws of planetary motion

Unit 5: Rigid Body Dynamics

Unit 6: Small Oscillations

  • Theory of small oscillations

Unit 7: Non-linear Dynamics and Chaos

  • Qualitative ideas of non-linear equations
  • Phase space and trajectories
