Chemistry
The relation between molarity and normality is that normality of a solution is always equal to the product of molarity and charge present in a solution. that is given by,
Normality = Molarity × Charge
N = M × C
Molarity and Normality is inter related to each other. Molarity refers to the concentration of solution and Normality also refers to the concentration of solution. Molarity deals with the number of moles of solute but Normality deals with the number of gram equivalent weight.
The mathematical relation between Molarity and Normality is Normality = Molarity × Charge. this mathematical relation will help to solve many problems related to Molarity and Normality. In the latter part of the article we also drive the mathematical relation between Molarity and Normality.
Before we know how molarity is related to normality. or the derivation of relation between molarity and normality. we should know the term Molarity and Normality.
What is Molarity?
Molarity refers to the concentration of a solution. It is defined as the number of moles of solute present in 1 litre or 1000 ml of solution. In other words Molarity is the number of moles of solute divided by the volume of solution. that is given by,
Molarity = Number of moles of solute ∕ volume of solution (in L)
Molarity is one of the way to determine the concentration of a solution. Molarity is denoted by 'M'.
What is Normality?
Normality is also the one of the way to determine the concentration of a solution. Normality is defined as the number of gram equivalent weight present in 1 litre or 1000 ml of solution. In other word Normality is defined ad the number of moles of solute divided by the volume of solution. Normality of a solution is denoted by the letter capital N.
Normality = number of gram equvalent weight of solute ∕ volume of solution
Gram eqivalent weight is defined as the weight of solute divided by the equivalent weight of solute. that is,
gram equivalent weight = weight of solute ∕ equivalent weight of solute
Normality = (weight of solute × 1000) ∕ equivalent weight × volume (in ml)
Equivalent weight
- Equivalent weight of element = Atomic weight ∕ valency
Example:- Equivalent weight of Aluminium = 27 ∕ 3 = 9
Example:- Equivalent weight of Sodium (Na) = 23 ∕ 1 = 23
- Equivalent weight of Acid = Molecular weight of acid ∕ Basicity
Basicity means number of H+ ions replace by one molecules.
Example:- Equivalent weight of H2SO4 = 98 ∕ 2 = 49
Example:- Equivalent weight of HCL = 36.5 ∕ 1 = 36.5
- Equivalent weight of Base = Molecular weight of base ∕ Acidity
Acidity means number of OH- ions replace by one molecules.
Example:- Equivalent weight of NaOH = 40 ∕ 1 = 40
Example:- Equivalent weight of Ca(OH)2 = 74 ∕ 2 = 37
Derive the relation between molarity and normality
As we know that the relation between molarity and normality is Normality = Molarity × Charge. but How Normality and molarity both are inter related. So lets derive the relation between molarity and normality. by this derivation we will know that how Normality = Molarity × Charge.
Normality = number of gram equvalent weight of solute ∕ volume of solution
Normality = No. of Eq. weight ∕ volume(V) -------------------(1)
No. of Eq. weight = weight of solute(W) ∕ equivalent weight of solute(E) -------------------(2)
Eq. weight of solute(E) = Molecular mass ∕ charge -----------(3)
From equation (2) and (3) we get,
No. of Eq. weight = (W × charge) ∕ molecular mass -------------------(4)
From equation (1) and (4) we get,
put the value of 'No. of Eq. weight' in equation (1) we get,
Normality = [(W × charge) ∕ molecular mass] divided by volume(in L)
Normality(N) = [Weight ∕ molecular weight × V (in L)] × charge ----------------------(5)
Now, we know that
Molarity(M) = n ∕ V (in L) -----------------------(6)
Molarity(M) = Weight ∕ molecular weight × V (in L) --------------------(7)
From equation (5) and (7) we get,
Normality(N) = Molarity(M) × charge
Normality = Molarity × charge
Hence, the relation between molarity and normality is verified or proved.
Convert Molarity into Normality
For converting Molarity into Normality is very easy. If you know the Molarity of a solution then you can easily convert it into Normality. here's are the example how to convert Molarity into Normality.
If you know the Molarity of a solution then you just multiply the Molarity to the charge present in the solution. you will find the result Normality. the formula used to convert Molarity into Normality is
Normality = Molarity × Charge.
For Acidic solution
Normality = Molarity × Basicity
For Basic solution
Normality = Molarity × Acidity
For solution that have element
Normality = Molarity × valency
