As we know, space is very different from Earth. There is no gravity like on Earth, and everything floats. Because of this, there are many simple things we do on Earth that astronauts can’t do in space. In this article, we will learn some daily things that are not possible in space due to zero gravity.
Let’s go further and see what astronauts can’t do in space.
1. Astronauts Can’t Cry Normally
On Earth, when we cry, tears fall down due to gravity. But in space, there is no gravity. So when astronauts cry, tears don’t fall, they stick around the eyes like bubbles. It feels very uncomfortable. This shows how even emotions feel different in space.
2. They Can’t Eat Normal Bread
As we know, we eat bread daily. But astronauts can’t eat normal bread in space. This is because bread crumbs float and can enter the eyes or machines. That’s why they eat tortillas or space-friendly food that doesn’t make crumbs.
So, even eating is different in space.
3. They Can’t Take a Bath or Shower
On Earth, we use running water to take bath. But in space, water floats. Astronauts can’t take a bath with flowing water. Instead, they use wet towels, rinseless shampoo, and no-water soap to clean themselves.
Note: Every drop of water is saved in space, so they use water very carefully.
4. Astronauts Can’t Sleep Like We Do
We sleep on a bed, but in space, there is no up or down. So astronauts can’t lie down. They sleep in sleeping bags attached to the wall, so they don’t float around. Also, they use eye covers because the sun rises every 90 minutes in space!
Hence, sleeping in space is totally different.
5. They Can’t Use a Regular Toilet
One of the most difficult tasks in space is going to the toilet. Astronauts can’t sit on a toilet like we do. They use special vacuum toilets that suck waste using air pressure. It needs training before going to space.
So, even using the toilet becomes a scientific task.
6. They Can’t Light a Normal Fire
On Earth, fire burns upwards due to gravity. But in space, fire becomes round and small. It needs oxygen and behaves differently. So astronauts can’t use lighters or matchsticks like we do. Fire in space is dangerous and must be controlled carefully.
7. They Can’t Walk Normally
As we know, walking needs friction. In space, everything floats. Astronauts can’t walk normally. Inside the space station, they push and float to move. When they go outside, they wear a space suit and move slowly by pulling themselves.
Note: Spacewalk is a very serious and slow process.
8. They Can’t Talk to People Instantly
On Earth, we talk and get replies instantly. But in space, there is delay in communication. Sometimes it takes a few seconds or minutes. This is because of the distance between Earth and spacecraft.
So, astronauts must wait and talk slowly with ground control.
Hence, we can say that astronauts face many challenges in daily tasks. They can’t cry, eat, sleep, or even walk like we do. Everything is different in space. That’s why astronauts are specially trained for these things.
Watching space from Earth looks fun, but living there needs courage, science, and a lot of patience. So always respect the hard work of astronauts who explore the universe for us.
